Understanding the Costs and ROI of Investing in an Autoclave

The formula for ROI on investing in new equipment is deceptively simple: Net Profit / Total Investment * 100 = ROI. However, this calculation is actually a lot more complicated than it first appears and a concept you may wish to discuss with your accountant. Here’s why:

Other Costs

Aside from the initial outlay, there are ongoing costs to operating an autoclave. There are tests and test equipment, the continuous use of water and electricity to generate steam and heat. There are also maintenance costs, for example, replacing a leaking gasket.

Quality of Autoclave

Then there is the age, brand, and quality of the autoclave to consider. How long will your autoclave operate, providing perfect sterilization. This can be affected by the brand you buy, and whether you are buying new or used.

Business Operations

You also have to calculate how your business operates and how much more business you are able to operate with a fully functioning and correctly sized autoclave. Would it be, for example, cheaper for the business for you to run two autoclaves side-by-side or one much larger one? That is what you have to look at.

The fact is you may not be able to operate your business at all without an autoclave, and if you have a particularly fast and efficient autoclave, you may be able to operate faster than you would be able to otherwise.

So, if you want to look at ROI, regarding the purchase of an autoclave, this is going to be a complex and sophisticated calculation, beyond to scope of the this short article.
