Common Reasons Why Autoclave Cycles Fail

Autoclaves perform their functions during what is called a cycle. The cycle is the whole process from start to finish when you need to perform your sterilization of instruments and materials. While autoclaves are reliable and have been the gold standard for sterilization for many years, sometimes a cycle gets interrupted or fails. In today’s blog article we are going to talk about some of the common reasons why autoclave cycles fail or do not complete the process and, for example, stop in the middle. 

What is important to understand is that the autoclave has to reach a specific temperature and pressure in order to do its job. Inside the autoclave are sensors that monitor the temperature and pressure. So, anything that interferes with the autoclave reaching its required temperature or pressure will stop the cycle. Below are some examples of what might prevent an autoclave from reaching a desired temperature and/or pressure. 

Electrical Problem 

Any interruption in the electricity would interfere with a cycle. An electrical problem could be a power failure or power surge or overloaded circuit. 

Water Problem 

Any interruption in the water flowing into the autoclave could also interrupt a cycle, assuming that your autoclave is hard-plumbed into a water supply. If, for example, your building shut off the water for maintenance, that would stop the autoclave. 

Seal Problem 

If the seal is damaged the autoclave would have difficulty reaching the right temperature or pressure. 

Improper Loading 

If the autoclave is not loaded properly, that can block the entry of water or steam into the vessel interrupting a cycle. 

If an autoclave cycle fails, it may not be difficult to troubleshoot. However, contact your autoclave specialist if you cannot solve the problem yourself.
