Tuttnauer 5596 Horizontal Steam Autoclave

The Tuttnauer 5596 is a 250-litre floor-standing horizontal steam sterilizer from Tuttnauer’s 44 & 55 Compact Series. Its slim footprint fits tight rooms, while the 20″ × 20″ × 38″ chamber takes carts, racks and bulk loads that a benchtop unit can’t.

It comes in a laboratory version and a healthcare version, with one door or two. Each unit is built to order around your loads, utilities and room.

Why the 5596

Narrow and compact

Tuttnauer designed the 5596 to fit a small space while maximizing load capacity. It can be recessed in one or two walls or stand free in a stainless steel cabinet.

One sterilizer, many load types

The laboratory version handles liquids in vented containers, glassware, instruments, media and waste, with gravity and pre-vacuum cycles from 105°C to 137°C. The healthcare version adds hospital cycles for wrapped and unwrapped instruments.

Simple controls and clear records

The BacSoft touchscreen stores the last 100 cycles. A built-in thermal printer records temperature, pressure, phases and alarms for every cycle, and data exports by USB or Ethernet.

Built for uptime

Stainless steel piping, pneumatically operated valves and non-proprietary components keep maintenance simple. The door gasket is sealed with compressed air rather than steam to extend gasket life.

• Double door (pass-through): load on one side and unload on the other, with full controls on the unloading side
• Room isolation seals: bio-seal, air differential seal or vermin seal between rooms
• Biohazard exhaust filtration cycle for BSL3 / ABSL3 laboratories
• Advanced cycles: F₀ cycle, isothermal disinfection cycle (70–95°C) and streaming steam cycle (105°C)
• Steam supply: building steam, an electric steam generator (stainless or carbon steel) or a steam-to-steam generator
• Clean steam piping (all stainless steel) for tissue culture, sterile water preparation and other special processes
• Mounting: recessed in one or two walls, or free-standing with a stainless steel cabinet; seismic tie-down kit available

How big is the Tuttnauer 5596 chamber?

The chamber is 20″ W × 20″ H × 38″ D (508 × 508 × 970 mm), for a volume of 9 cubic feet (250 litres). The cabinet-enclosed single-door unit is about 33″ W × 75″ H × 55″ L and weighs about 1,700 lb empty, per Tuttnauer’s 2026 specifications.

Should I choose the 5596 or a Tuttnauer 66 Series?

The 5596 is the narrow, compact choice at 250 L. If you need more capacity, the Tuttnauer 66 Series offers 430 L (66C) and 540 L (66D) chambers. For smaller volumes, the 4472 (120 L) is the 5596’s smaller sibling. We’ll help you size it to your daily loads.

Is the 5596 available with two doors?

Yes. It can be built as a single-door unit or as a double-door (pass-through) unit, with automatic vertical sliding doors. Pass-through units can also be fitted with room isolation seals between the load and unload sides.

What utilities does the 5596 need?

Per Tuttnauer: plant steam at 50–80 psig through a 3/4″ NPT line (or an optional steam generator), cold water at 45 psig minimum (3/4″ NPT, 8 GPM peak), a 2″ drain, compressed air at 90 psig and 3.5 SCFM (or an optional compressor), and a dedicated 120 V, 20 A circuit for the controls. The optional vacuum pump needs 3-phase 208 V or 480 V power. We’ll go over your utilities and room before you order.

What cycles come with the 5596?

The laboratory version has 14 preset programs and up to 20 customizable cycles from 105°C to 137°C, covering liquids, gravity and pre-vacuum loads, plus Air Removal and Vacuum Leak tests. The healthcare version comes with IUSS, wrapped, IUSS delicate and wrapped delicate cycles, Bowie-Dick and vacuum tests, and up to 16 custom cycles.

Is the Tuttnauer 5596 licensed by Health Canada?

Health Canada’s medical device licence listing shows model 5596 under Tuttnauer’s Class II “Steam Sterilizer Horizontal” licence (No. 60335). If you are buying for clinical use, we’ll confirm the licence status of your exact configuration with your quote.
