What are Automatic Autoclaves?

An autoclave is a device used for the sterilization of many different media. Autoclaves come in all sorts of shapes and sizes depending on the primary function of the specific autoclave. These sterilizers are used in many fields, including:

-        Biology

-        Medicine

-        Tattoo and Body Piercings

-        Dentistry

What is Sterilization?

Sterilization is a process in which bacteria and all other living organisms are removed, killed, or deactivated from an object or medium. Sterilization is important in many industries, as unwanted bacteria, fungi or other organisms could cause illness, infection, or affect the results of certain studies and experiments.

How does an Autoclave work?

An automatic autoclave is a piece of specialized sterilization equipment that works by elevating the temperature and adjusting the pressure of the chamber inside. Before an automatic autoclave begins, it must first remove any air that is trapped in the chamber, as trapped outside air is detrimental to sterility.  Once this process is complete, the autoclave then uses steam at a high temperature, often upwards of 130 celsius in order to sterilize the chamber and the contents within it.

The requirement to remove air to achieve proper sterilization means there is a need for specific, high-quality autoclaves when faced with unique glassware such as pipets, or other hollow mediums. If you are looking at autoclaves, make sure you choose the right type for your primary application. Speak with a rep from Alpha Scientific for more information on which automatic autoclave can best serve you.
