How to Determine What Size Autoclave You Need

Determining what size autoclave you need depends on three variables: how much material needs to be sterilized, how often that material needs to be sterilized, and what space you have available. Today, in our blog, we are going to discuss determining the size of the autoclave you need for your lab, clinic, or business.
Space
First, let’s talk about space. Autoclaves come in all sizes, from small countertop models to large models. No matter what you need the autoclave for, you have to have the space for it, and it will be have to be hard-wired into your electrical system and plumbed into your water lines.
Material Volume
The next consideration is the volume of material. How much material or how many objects or instruments need autoclaving? Obviously, a larger autoclave can handle more volume, but a smaller autoclave can work for you if space is limited, by running more than one cycle.
Frequency of Sterilization
Next there is the frequency of sterilization needed. For example, if your clinic is open only one day per week, then you will likely need fewer cycles of sterilization than if it is open seven days per week and 24 hours per day. So, the key question is how often are materials being used and needing sterilization?
The most important takeaway, here, is that you should let an autoclave professional help you choose your autoclave. The person who is familiar with the many autoclaves available is going to know about autoclave characteristics that you do not. For example, is it important to you that the autoclave prints out what cycles were done and when, so you have a written record? So, before deciding on an autoclave, we recommend that you first choose the autoclave people you want to work with, professionals with a long experience, who will be available to service your autoclave and answer your questions.
