Can Old Autoclaves Be Refurbished?

The answer to the question in the title of today’s blog article is “maybe.” Some autoclaves may be able to be refurbished, but for others it may not be cost effective to do so. If you are wondering whether it is possible to buy a refurbished autoclave, then the answer is “it is possible.” 

Because of their critical role, autoclaves require several different certifications starting with their manufacture, and their adherence to certain standards is regulated in Canada both federally and by province. (And the rules for how they are certified may vary by province.) So, even if an autoclave is refurbished, it will still have to go through a rigorous testing process in order to be sold. 

Also, remember that autoclaves require regular testing, maintenance, validation, and inspection. So, if you are wondering whether it is safe to use a refurbished autoclave, then the answer is “yes” because you would be testing it at regular intervals to be sure it is operating as it should be, and heating and maintaining pressure as required. 

If an autoclave is refurbished, it would be done by someone certified to do so. This is definitely not a DIY job. Autoclaves sterilize instruments and materials using water, heat, pressure, and steam. As such, it is absolutely imperative that anyone using a refurbished autoclave knows the device is doing what it is supposed to do, flawlessly.
